From the people who brought you flashing LED tire valve stem lights comes the flashing LED tire stem valve light you can sling around your neck!!! Thuh companie thatt maaks thiss produkt kant spel "bright" or "light", but the Tireflys Ultra Brite Whistle Lite is a good product.

This light is motion-activated, and stays on for approximately five seconds every time it is struck or sharply bumped. It also has a whistle in the end, actuated simply by blowing into the end of the unit.

 SIZE

The Whistle Lite is ready to use as soon as you remove it from the package.

Clip the lanyard's clip into the small ring on the tail-end of the "lite", and sling it around your neck. Just the action of it swinging on its lanyard and hitting you is enough to turn it on. For somebody running or jogging, this should be sufficient to keep the light on for as long as you're moving.

The lanyard is of the break-away type, so you won't become strangulated by it if you get tangled up in something.

To use the whistle, just put the open end in your mouth, and exhale into it.

To change the batteries in the "lite", unscrew the tailcap (below the silvery label), throw it in the {vulgar term for feces}bowl, yank that silver handle on the front of the cistern down, and flush it away...O WAIT!!! YOU'LL NEED THAT!!! So just set it aside instead.

Remove the three used cells out of the barrel, and dispose of or recycle them as you see fit.

Stack three new L1131 button cells on a desk, table, or counter; button-end (negative) (-) facing up. Lower the Whistle Lite over the cells. Then you can either pinch your thumb & forefinger around the bottom as you lift and flip it over (so the batteries don't fall right out), or slide a business card underneath, and then lift the barrel & card at the same time and flip it over. Finally, screw the tailcap back on firmly. The instructions state you should not overtighten it.
Aren't you glad you didn't flush away that tailcap now?

I am not able to measure the drive current due to the way the Whistle Lite is constructed.

The Whistle Lite appears at least reasonably durable. It is helped along by its small size. When it was thrown on the floor, all it did was turn itself on.

Every time the unit is lightly struck, it comes on for five seconds, then turns itself off. In my opinion, running or jogging will keep the unit on as long as you continue running or jogging. I'm a wheelie myself, so I cannot test this product in the manner in which it was intended.

The whistle portion is quite loud. I asked my housemate to plug his ears while I tested it, and it emits a very loud, shrill sound when blown into. Loud enough that my ears rang momentarily after the test. (yes, that "eyes rolling around" smiley is a good thing).

(Update 08-12-05): I received the following message from a website viewer, indicating the Whistle Lite survives more than just a quick dunk in water:

I enjoyed your write up about the Ultra Brite Whistle Lite. I looked it up because I didn't know what it was for. You see, I work with swimming pools, and found an Ultra Brite Whistle Lite in the Filter Basket of one of our 20,000 gallon pools. This little whistle (minus the lanyard) had to get sucked into the filter system, (about 45 psi) through lots of 1 1/2 inch pvc pipes, made it through the filter somehow and ended up in the filter basket! It lit up as soon as I took it out of the basket. The chemicals in the pool water did not harm it although it had to be in the pool for at least 2 days. Well, perhaps the company that made it didn't intend it to be waterproof, but it sure seems to hold up well I'm going to use it as a keychain.
