This is a small (handheld) source of NUV (near-ultraviolet) radiation. It comes in an almost all-aluminum body, has 12 NUV LEDs in its end, and is powered by three AAA cells held in a side-by-side carriage in its barrel to hep keep the length down.

The dominant wavelength (where you would point to on a color chart) appears to be approximately 400nm; which is in the deep violet part of the spectrum.

To use this torch, feed it first (see directly below), and then you'll be ready to rock.

Push the rubberised button on the tailcap firmly until it clicks and then release it to turn the product on.

Push and release the button the same way again to turn the product off.

To change the batteries in this product, unscrew and remove the tailcap, dash it to the ground, and stomp on it with old or used spiked golf shoes...O WAIT!!! YOU'LL NEED THAT!!! So just set it aside instead.

Tip the black plastic battery carriage out of the barrel and into your hand. If necessary, remove and dispose of or recycle the used cells if they are present in this carriage.

Insert three new AAA cells into the carriage, one in each compartment. Orient each cell so the flat-end (-) negative faces a spring for it in its compartment.

Once the carriage is full, insert it into the flashlight's barrel, aiming it so the spring on the end goes in first. Screw the tailcap back on, and be done with it.
Aren't you glad you didn't stomp on that tailcap now?

Curerent usage measures 128.3mA on my DMM's 400mA scale.
This equates to 10.692mA per LED. Which means the LEDs are *not* overdriven at all, and should have a significantly longer "to half-intensity" life than NUV LEDs driven to spec - usually 20mA for this type and size of lamp.

Photograph of the product's "business-end", showing the 12 LEDs.

The flashlight appears to be reasonably sturdy. Ordinary flashlight accidents should not be enough to do it in. I administered that terrible smack test on it (ten whacks against the corner of a concrete stair; five whacks against the side of the tailcap and five whacks against the side of the bezel), and found the expected damage. There is some gouging on the sides of the tailcap and bezel where it was struck. No optical or electrical malfunctions were detected.

This product is weather- and splash-resistant, but it isn't waterproof or submersible. So please try not to drop it in creeks, rivers, ponds, lakes, oceansides, docksides, puddles of rat pee, slush piles, mud puddles, tubs, toilet bowls, cisterns, sinks, fishtanks, dog water dishes, or other places where water or water-like liquids might be found. A little rain or snow probably wouldn't hurt it though, so you need not be too concerned about using it in moderately bad weather.

If it fell in water and you suspect it got flooded, disassemble it as you would for a battery change, dump out the water if necessary, and set the parts in a warm dry place for a day or so just to be sure it's completely dry inside before you reassemble and use it again.

If it fell into seawater or if somebody or something peed on it, douche all the parts out with fresh water before setting them out to dry. You don't want your flashlight to smell like seaweed or piss when you go to use it next. Besides, salt (from seawater or pee-pee) can't be very good for the insides.

Beam photograph on the test target at 12".
Wavelength is too short to measure its intensity with my instruments.

Photograph of attempted fluorescence at ~8 feet.

The three things that glowed most strongly are digimon plush:
Ikkakumon on the left, Guilmon to the immediate right, and Stingmon with the two green glowing antennae; to the right of Guilmon. All are near or on my CD cases.

In both of these photographs, my camera did not interpret the color correctly; it would appear as a deep royal purple to the eye, not magenta as you see here.

TEST NOTES:
Test unit was purchased from Lighthound on 02-08-06, and was received on the afternoon of 02-11-06.
