Medical P/C Argon Laser Safety Goggles, retail $TBA (www.coherent.com*)
Manufactured by Coherent (www.coherent.com)

This product does not emit light of its own, so the standard review format will not be used; however, since I consider them "test equipment", they will be furnished with a "star" rating. This web page will consist of just some informational text, four photographs, and two spectrographic analyses.

These are laser safety goggles designed for the blue-green argon-ion laser at 488nm; however, they offer excellent protection for all visible wavelengths shorter than 516nm.

Their OD (Optical Density) is stated as 5.0 at wavelengths of 515nm and below -- this encompasses EM radiation (visible light) with colors as follows:

Bluish green
Greenish blue (aka. "turquoise" or "aqua")
Blue
Royal blue
Violet-blue
Violet

They have acrylic lenses, a soft rubbery shroud (to keep unwanted stray laser radiation from entering your eyes from the sides, top, and bottom), and an elastic (stretchy) strap that is used to affix them to your head.
They are also equipped with ventilation ports to help prevent fogging of the lens interior.

These goggles are advertised (in the instructional materials furnished with them) to attenuate (dim) laser radiation at wavelengths of 515nm and shorter by 100,000 times!!!

Although they will stop almost all of the laser radiation, you can still see where the beam is terminating thanks to a yellow fluorescence that appears wherever the laser is shining.

Me with the goggles on as they are intended to be used.

Blue laser spot from this product as viewed through these goggles.

Spectrographic analysis
Spectrographic analysis of sunlight to use as a control.

Spectrographic analysis
Spectrographic analysis of sunlight with these goggles placed in front of the spectrometer's light input aperture.
Note the near-sudden cutoff at ~530nm.

Spectrographic analysis
Spectrographic analysis of the Arc LS Royal Blue LED Flashlight through these goggles.

Spectrographic analysis
Spectrographic analysis of the UVC fluoro tube in the UVC + Incandescent Lamp through these goggles.

TEST NOTES:
Test unit was purchased on Ebay sometime in 2004 to be used with the Spectra-Physics 161B-060 Air-Cooled Argon Ion Laser that I received in late-2003.
